    More Email Tricks

I talked to a lady today who uses her TurboNet email account only to send pictures.  But it had accumulated 338 emails, which her computer was in the process of downloading, just so she could delete them.  I offered to set a limit on her account, so that emails older than five days would be deleted.  That way, if she was actually expecting an email to come there, she could still get it.  If you don’t check your TurboNet email very often, and you’re on a slow dial-up line so that it takes a long time to receive your emails, you might ask to have this done.  You pick the number of days the email is saved.  Send the request to Monica@TurboNet.com.

    Sending Photos the quick way

Email is great for sending text, and small attachments are fine.  But if you want to send a large photo, or a group of photos, it makes sense to post them to a web site and let your friends each download them.  This is especially true in these days of megapixel cameras.

We’ll be happy to set up a personal web site for you.  No charge for TurboNet customers.   Then you put the photos on the web site as follows:

From a Windows XP computer (it’s similar for Vista):

1.  Double-click on My Computer and navigate to where the photos (or PDF files, or whatever) are stored.

2.  Double-click on My Computer again, to pull up a second window.  In the Address line at the top (if you don’t have an address line, go to the View menu, click Toolbars, and check Address Bar) type your web site’s FTP address – if it’s a personal site with Cactus:  ftp://personal.palouse.net

3.  It will ask you for your username and password.  Then drag the photos or files from where they are, in the first My Computer, into the second one.  This causes Windows XP to send them to your web site.

4.  Email the URLs to your friends.  These will be something like http://personal.palouse.net/mysite/photo1.jpg    Picture of Aunt Maizy

http://personal.palouse.net/mysite/photo2.jpg   Aunt Maizy and cousin It.

etc.
