    Email Tricks

If you’re on a dial-up line, one of your frustrations is probably people who send you large emails – so large that it takes you hours to download just one.  You can tell our mail server to reject large emails.  Here’s how:

1.  Log in to your Web Email account at http://mail.turbonet.com/mail

2.  Click the Settings button above, then the Server Rules link on the left.  This will show you your Black and White list.

3.  Change the item to “Size Greater”

4.  In the String field, type the largest size you want to accept, in bytes (not Kbytes).  Here’s an example:

Note that the size in this case is 512000, which is 500K bytes.  That’s about the largest email size which is comfortable to receive on a good dial-up line.  If your line is slow or you’re the impatient type, you’ll want to make the number even smaller, say 200K (which is 204800 bytes).

In the above example, the Action is “Reject”.  This will send a “failed mail” notice to the sender.  If you don’t want to let the sender know you didn’t get their message, change the action to “Delete”.  And if you have a Spam folder, and want to have the message saved for 7 days (in case Aunt Elizabeth calls you to task for not seeing the thrice-forwarded photos she sent) choose “Mark as spam”.

If you have trouble, or just want me to do it for you, please phone 883-5500 or send a note to Monica@TurboNet.com with the email address and the maximum size you want.

I can also turn on your spam folder if you’d like anything with a spam score greater than 5 (or some other number – it’s adjustable) to go into your spam folder instead of your inbox.  Messages in the spam folder are kept on the server for 7 days, then automatically deleted.
