FTP Instructions
Your entry for "FTP server" depends on which category of account
you have. For a personal or community (public service) account, there is no charge
for the web space, but you do have to sign up for it.
Business webspace prices depend on the level of
service wanted.

Unless other arrangements were made, use your regular username and
password for access. Don't enter anything for destination directory - our FTP server
will put you where you belong based on your username.
If you don't already have one, you can download an FTP program from http://www.tucows.com.
We think that CuteFTP or WS_FTP are the best ones (because those are the ones we can help you
with the easiest). Also, many HTTL page layout
programs will FTP the pages for you if set up correctly. Here is a
sample connect screen from Cute FTP for a business which has its own domain.
Your default page should be named default.htm, or index.html. That way, if a reader
doesn't specify a page, they'll get that one. For example, if the Web URL for
your main page is
http://www.palouse.net/mcctwigg/default.htm
then people can also get to the same page using
http://www.palouse.net/mcctwigg
as an address. And shorter is better on the Web.
To publicize your site across the Internet, fill out and submit the forms at
www.submit-it.com, and submit it to the big search engines individually. We've made a page
with links to them:
http://family.palouse.net/cassie
In order to make your pages more search-engine friendly, the following code example can be
helpful. (Look at the source for
http://www.silvercreeksupply.com/NewLaw/hardware/badges.htm to see how it's used)
<meta name="description"
content="Stock badges for Law Enforcement and Security officers in gold and nickel.
Custom badges can be ordered.">
<meta name="keywords"
content="badges, security, police, law enforcement, supplies">
The description and keywords meta tags are used by search engines to categorize your page.
If the tags aren't present, the search engine will take the first 50-150 words from the
page, and that is probably less pertinent, and harder for the person who's searching to
read.
When your business or community site is ready, please let me know and I'll add you into
the appropriate section in the Palouse
and the Yellow
Pages or Community
Pages.
